Typically, a beginner will know how to perform a rear naked choke and a few collar chokes from the back position; these chokes will soon be blocked or defended against as the level of competition rises. This is a variation on the regular collar choke where the attacking arm comes from a less typical angle.

Choke from the Back Position
1
In this situation, Marco has me in the back position with both hooks in and both hands on the floor.

2 & 3
Instead of attacking from the same side of my neck, Marco moves his right arm to the left side of my neck and secures my collar with his thumb inside.
4
Marco will now move his left hand to the other side of my neck, grabbing the fabric of my gi on the shoulder.
5
To complete the choke, Marco pulls his right arm to the right and left arm to the left as he leans back with a tight grip on my collar and gi fabric.

6 & 7
In Figure 6, I begin to resist before Marco secures the left hand. He will now move his right knee from the 'hook' position near my neck.
8
To complete the choke, Marco slides his shin against the back of my neck, pulls with his right hand and extends his shin into the back of my neck.
9
Figure 9 is a variation in which the right leg can be placed over the face to complete the choke; this variation will set you up for the armbar in the event that the choke fails.
